Towers. A solo theatre work.
Towers is a solo theatre work that
I created as part of my Masters
in Theatre and Performance.
As well as featuring multiple characters, it used images and
written statements to emphasis
and further explore the themes of
social injustice within it.
You can find a selection of some of those images in the gallery beside this text.
The show was originally intended as a live performance with back projections, which is where these images would have appeared. Due the global pandemic it became on online project that utilised film and video editing to create the intended work.
In Towers we are taken from key moments and issues of the past to those very same issues repeating in the present of a global pandemic.
Disaster capitalism, governmental corruption and cronyism, the hollow platitudes of the populist politician, 40 years of lining their pockets to the great cost of the many. The order of the day appears to be wilful, weaponised ignorance.
How bad do things have to get?
Towers uses straight drama, stand-up comedy and biography to highlight and hold modern day evils to account.

TOWERS PORFOLIO. A COMPANION AND CONTINUATION. AN EXAMINATION OF PROCESS WHILE CONTINUING THAT PROCESS. RESEARCH AND PRACTICE COMBINED.
Here you will find a companion piece to the theatre work Towers. It tells you how I came to make the show and the influences involved in it's creation. It is also a continuation of my biographical work as well as a continued stand of defiance against our government and other forms of the establishment.
It is written to be deliberately accessible to non academics. The work ends with a complete reproduction of Trade Unionist Jimmy Reid's 'Alienation' speech which he delivered when becoming the rector of Glasgow University.
NOTES FOR SOLO PLAY & TOWERS.
Here we have two examples of the note taking I engage in when creating scripts. The notes for Solo Play are from an abandoned project but elements of grew into the show Towers. There are also the notes from Towers. May be helpful or useful to people wishing to see the methods writers use to create work.
NOTES FROM PRESENTATION
One of the aims of the show Towers was to induce feelings of catharsis in the audience. As part of a presentation I researched what catharsis is and how we may find ways to induce it in group setting.
ESSAY. CLASS MISREPRESENTATION IN MODERN
Here you will find an essay around the barriers and inhibitors that working class artists face when trying to seek a career in the performing arts. Academically it is not a strong essay, but for practicality it is full of facts regarding why the situation is as it is. Towers as a piece of theatre regularly examines the plight of the working classes.
ESSAY. RESEARCHING PERFORMANCE PRACTICE.
An essay studying the performance practice methods of three different artists. Academically solid and included here as proof I will engage with more traditional forms of discourse.
